Collaborating with another Experience Design student, this map is the result of a 'smellwalk' through the Greenway in Boston. Creating a smellscape requires one to reorient the senses, allowing smells to come to the foreground of perception rather than mostly pay attention to visuals as we normally might.
After walking around with nostrils open, making frequent mindful stops, taking lots of notes, and conversing with gardeners along the Greenway, we condensed our data into nine odor categories with their locations. The map's odors give hints as to what commercial, industrial, and natural features are nearby, and hopefully inspire people to consider the role smells play in shaping their experiences as they stroll through town.
